Lots of moderate or conservative Americans have been criticized, ostracized, or pushed out of organizations because of their personal views. Sadly, the only kind of diversity today’s progressives and socialist Democrats don’t like is diversity of opinion!
Lots of people have been vilified by the woke mob, so it shouldn’t surprise us when it happens to conservative candidates like Marty O’Donnell, Republican Congressional candidate for CD-3 in Nevada.
That is the kind of intolerance behind the recent decision by organizers of SacAnime to not involve Halo composer and developer Marty O’Donnell to their event, where there is a Halo 25th anniversary reunion planned.
Marty had been invited, and his role prominently promoted by the event organizers. But a message sent to Marty said that LGBTQ+ members of SacAnime’s staff were uncomfortable with his attendance. SacAnime subsequently dis-invited him and removed his name from its promotional materials.
The controversy stemmed from a misrepresentation of comments O’Donnell made on a podcast in which he discussed the threat to Western civilization form Marxists and their allies. He identified Marxism and anti-Western philosophy as an “existential threat” and described what he called a “weird alliance” that includes some LGBTQ+ leaders and Islamists who have temporarily aligned themselves with anti-Western actors, even though they have fundamentally different beliefs.
That distinction is important. O’Donnell did not say that LGBTQ+ people were an existential threat. Rather, he identified Marxism/anti-Western ideology as the threat. He also accurately noted that some LGBTQ+ activists are among those participating in an anti-Western political alliance, even when it involves other groups who are openly hostile to their values.
Marty, rightly so, has characterized the incident as “cancel culture” and political discrimination, arguing that his comments were deliberately misrepresented and that he was effectively excluded from a cultural event because he is a conservative Republican congressional candidate.
SacAnime is sticking to its position and has not provided a detailed public explanation beyond that.
SacAnime’s decision unwittingly played right into Marty’s hands, giving him a powerful campaign narrative: a prominent video-game creator was excluded from a celebration of an iconic game he helped create because his conservative political views are seen as controversial. This is just one example of how conservatives are being excluded from events, discussions, and institutions simply because of their political beliefs.
Bottom line: this “dis-invitation,” at the supposed insistence of some LGBTQ+ people within SacAnime, has turned into a broader free-speech/cancel-culture issue. It also proves the broader point that left-wing ideology tries to marginalize people with different opinions rather than engage them in constructive and factual debate.
